Congratulations to our Middle and High School Quiz Bowl Tournament teams who participated in last Saturday’s Hong Kong International School’s Fall Novice Invitational Quiz Bowl Tournament. ASB entered two Quiz Bowl teams and placed second and sixth overall, out of 18 teams competing from nine schools across the region. Schools who competed hailed from Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, China, Korea and India, and as our first live tournament this was an impressive result.

So what is a Quiz Bowl Tournament exactly?

Quiz Bowl is a game or competition in which two teams compete head-to-head to answer general knowledge questions from the key academic subjects of  history, literature and science. Other subjects which feature in the questioning are fine arts, current events, sports and popular culture. It is similar to quiz shows like Jeopardy, and participants must answer questions quickly and accurately.

Interested in joining the Quiz Bowl club? Here’s a few fast facts:

  • Practice is every Wednesday from 5pm - 6pm.
  • We compete online every Thursday from 5pm - 6pm.
  • Anyone from Middle School and High School can join.
  • Post-covid there'll be opportunities for traveling internationally.
  • The next international competition will be online and hosted by Singapore American School in the Spring

Mr Sinclair (HS) and Ms Newman (MS) run ASB’s Quiz Bowl club and are always on the lookout for new members.

“Quiz Bowl is a ton of fun and a great club to join, especially in these COVID times,” said Mr Sinclair after the competition. “Everyone starts off not knowing much, but the more you practice the better you'll get. All you need to know is something about one of the key areas of history, science or literature. If you know anything about music or art you can become a strong player.”

As an academic competition, Mr Sinclair also highlighted that for students looking for something a little extra for their college applications, this can set them apart from the thousands of students who do other activities. It’s niche and allows students to compete at a very high level.

And the HKIS Fall Novice Tournament?

This tournament was the first time ASB has competed in a live Quiz Bowl competition. We entered two teams with students from both the Middle and High School competing. Competition was tough, yet our teams held their cool and the results speak for themselves.

ASB B placed sixth in the eighteen-team field, while ASB A placed second, knocking off two of Singapore's top private schools in the elimination rounds as well as a strong team from Seoul Foreign School to make it to the finals, where they lost a close match to the HKIS A team.

ASB A was led by team captain Rahul Dube and fellow tenth-grade student Vivek Shah, who finished sixth in individual scoring. They were joined by eighth-grade players Vivaan Parikh and Nicholas Vucinic.

ASB B team captain Aryaman Murdeshwar finished second in individual scoring and was supported by fellow 11th-grade student Marko Vucinic, as well as ninth-grader Ashely Franzen and seventh-grader Vinamr Gupta, both playing in their first competitive matches.
